Eu sempre tive um caso de amor com os ingleses. Não pensem que eu ignoro o que fez o Império Britânico ou as posições recentes sistematicamente ao lado dos EUA. Não pensem que eu gostava de Thatcher, por exemplo. Na verdade, eu amo três coisas: a literatura inglesa, a cidade de Londres e seus habitantes.
Não sei se um dia voltarei à cidade da qual gosto tanto, mas vou tentar.
Agora, quando cheguei em casa após o Concerto da Ospa, soube que a BBC fizera uma pesquisa com scholars e críticos ingleses para votar nos melhores romances ingleses. Eu disse ingleses, então Joyce, Beckett e outros estão de fora. Também só tem romances na lista. Li os critérios e achei que, opa, esta lista será das boas.
Eram 100 romances e eu fiquei moralmente muito feliz com a lista. Disse aqui em casa que os três primeiros seriam x, y e z, e errei só o terceiro lugar, que apareceu em quarto. Disse que a lista estaria cheia de mulheres e está. Elas têm o “trio vencedor”. Me perguntaram: quantas estarão dentre os dez melhores livros? Respondi que cinco: George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte e Emily Brontë e mais Jane Austen. Acertei o número, mas errei uma: Austen ficou fora do top 10, mas em seu lugar entrou Mary Shelley.
E, para meu pasmo, eu li TODOS os 25 primeiros colocados. Ou seja, minha anglofilia literária tem melhor foco do que meus óculos, atualmente.
É meio bobo ficar feliz com isso, mas eu fiquei, sabe?
